Liberation Afro Beat, Vol. 1

liberation

Inspired by Fela Kuti, Antibalas are the multi-racial 14-piece Brooklyn collective who are named after the word for “bulletproof” in Spanish. They are not exactly straight Afro Beat revivalists, Liberation Afro Beat Vol. 1 adds New York’s strong musical heritage of funk, jazz and Latin groove on top of Afro Beat’s polyrhythms to amazing effect.

The collection’s incendiary Afro/Latin/American fusion may suggest a party album, but there is a deep motivation to their sound. You can make out the cries of war in “Dirt & Blood” and “World War IV” denounces American foreign policy. This album is a true modern classic.

Track listing:

 1. Si, Se Puede
  2. Dirt and Blood
  3. Battle of the Species
  4. N.E.S.T.A (Never Ever Submit to Authority)
  5. Musicawi Silt
  6. Uprising
  7. El Machete
  8. World War IV
