The CD captures the dynamic live performances that Femi has been bringing to crowds worldwide his entire career. The music is a collection of new material, culled from many songs Femi has been developing since his last recording, 2001’s critically acclaimed Fight to Win. The album features two live versions of previously released tracks, including “1997” a eulogy to his fallen father, Fela Kuti, the originator of Afro-beat. Live at the Shine also contains an inspired re-working of Fela’s song : “Water No Get Enemy.”
The Live At The Shrine DVD contains stirring concert footage, interviews with Femi, his band, and his fans. The documentary features scenes of street life in Lagos that document both the city’s grinding poverty and vibrant spirit as well as an inside look at the day to day workings of The Shrine, built by Femi as a memorial to his father. The DVD also explores the motives behind Femi’s “Sunday Jumps” weekly concerts that have become a rallying point for political resistance as well as a method for blowing off some of the pressure created by an imploding society.
